Rob,

All good points. Having a better story with regards to multimedia is seen as one of the most important factors in acceptance of XenDesktop. Fortunately there is work being done to address this in Project Apollo. It is even possible to request access to the latest tech preview at http://www.citrix.com/English/ss/downloads/details.asp?downloadId=1340963&productId=163057 .

Thanks,
Jeff

The show stopper for us with SBC (currently XenApp users) is multimedia performance. Sure, there are some companies who can dictate what users do on their computers but this is at odds with initatives like the "Employee owned computer". It (poor video, Flash and PPT animation) is becoming a show stopper for us. If you can crack that one guys, I'll buy into the virtualised desktop. I agree that desktop virtualisaton is a branch of SBC albiet pretty different under the hood.

In the meantime, we're looking at the technologies to stream applications and maybe complete operating systems down to the desktop. We're not in a hurry to loose the advantages SBC gives us but the pressure to run PPT, Flash & videos in our sector is becoming strong to resist.

There is a oxymoron going on here - "Hey, look at Vista & MAC - aren't these new interfaces wonderful" and "ahh, but of course you can't have them on virtualised desktops"...

No one is better educated or positioned to talk about VDI as a concept than someone who knows application deployment through Terminal Services and Citrix.

Virtualization engineers, cloistered and protected in the data center for the last couple of years, have no idea the pain they are about to experience out in the VDI jungle of users, apps, printers, scanners and other devices that exist outside the DC.

It is our opinion that both VDI and SBC as concepts are required for an optimal deployment and as 'clouds' are talked about more - and resources move farther away - we believe that the old Citrix mantra of any app, anytime, from anywhere is the strongers message ever. ...Sure hope they figure it all out in time.

Boy, Dell is about to get "delled", why would I buy a pc in the future when I can rent the latest desktop when I can rent it monthly from my cloud/service provider? They hear footsteps. The only thing holding us back is rich gaming remoting.
